Viruses, fungi & environmental allergens are inhaled and travel to the airways. Once there, these stimuli damage the epithelium which causes the release of alarmins: IL-33, IL-25, TSLP. ILC2, innate immune cells, are activated and release pro-inflammatory Type 2 cytokines such as IL-5 and IL-13 for the recruitment of eosinophils and mucus production, respectively. T helper cells, adaptive immune cells, are activated in an antigen-dependent manner via dendritic cells.
