The Cori cycle uses lactate, a product of anaerobic glycolysis, to produce glucose. The Cori cycle is only used by the muscles because of the lack of phosphatase to break down glucose-6-phosphate (G6P). In the absence of phosphatase, G6P goes through anaerobic glycolysis to produce lactate. Lactate is utilized by the liver to produce glucose through gluconeogenesis. Via the Cori cycle, our muscles can be free of lactic acidosis and continue their normal functioning during hypoglycemic states.
