Process of Blood Clot Formation
Description
Ischemic stroke arises due to blockage in the blood vessel and the removal of blockage helps to reduce the damage in the peri-infarct region. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is the FDA approved drug for treating ischemic stroke. Tissue plasminogen activator activates fibrin bound plasminogen into plasmin. Plasmin degrades the fibrin network into a degradable form. The free tPA and plasmin in the circulation is inactivated by Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1 and α2 antiplasmin respectively.
