Electrospray ionization (ESI)
Description
ESI is an ionization method used in mass spectrometry. A Taylor cone is formed at the tip of the ESI needle, and a large droplet is produced, which contains several analyte molecules and charges. As the solvent evaporates, the charge intensity on the surface of the droplet gradually increases. The concentration of charges on the droplet leads to a Coulombic explosion. Several smaller droplets are formed and enter the mass analyzer due to a difference in electrical potential.
