A schematic representation of the mechanism for understanding DAO1 as a negative selection marker
Description
DAO1 functions as a negative selection marker by oxidizing D-amino acids to produce hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), a reactive oxygen species. Transgenic cells expressing DAO1 generate H₂O₂ when exposed to D-amino acids, leading to their selective death. In contrast, non-transgenic cells that do not express DAO1 remain unaffected, as they do not produce H₂O₂.
