Accumulation of passenger and driver mutations during tumor development
Description
Tumor development is driven by the accumulation of somatic mutations, while proliferating into sub-clonal populations with time. Only a few of these mutations, the so-called “driver” mutations, confer a selective fitness advantage. Most of the other mutations accumulated are selectively neutral, known as passenger mutations that exist in the population due to random chance events. Since they remain unmodified by selection, they can reflect the underlying mutational processes that generated them.
