Calcitonin gene-related peptide-targeting drugs for migraine
Description
Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is involved in migraine pathophysiology due to prominent expression and effects within the trigeminovascular system. This figure shows novel migraine therapies that target CGRP or its receptor. Small molecule CGRP receptor antagonists (rimegepant, ubrogepant) are effective for the acute treatment of migraine, while monoclonal antibodies against CGRP (eptinezumab, fremanezumab, galcanezumab) or the CGRP receptor (erenumab) are beneficial as prophylaxis.
