(A) Cryptococcal spores are commonly found in the environment, especially in bird droppings and decaying wood. (B) Humans can become infected by inhaling these spores. (C) If the immune system does not effectively control the yeast, it can lead to a pulmonary infection. (D) The yeast can then spread to other .organs through the bloodstream. (E) Upon crossing the blood-brain barrier, it can cause central nervous system infections, resulting in meningoencephalitis and/or cryptococcomal lesions.
