Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Life Cycle
Description
This illustration depicts the life cycle of Leishmania sp. The vector acquires amastigotes while feeding on an infected host. In the mosquito’s midgut, amastigotes transform into promastigotes, multiply, and migrate to the proboscis, becoming infective. Transmission occurs through a sandfly bite, introducing metacyclic promastigotes into the skin. The parasites are phagocytosed by macrophages, where they differentiate into amastigotes, multiply intracellularly, and spread after macrophage lysis.
