Eukaryogenesis by double endosymbiosis
Description
It was believed for a long time that eukaryotes emerged as a result of symbiosis between an Asgard archaeon and an alpha-proteobactrerium. A new hypothesis with mounting evidence suggests that the eukaryotic cell is a product of three prokaryotes instead of two ones.
This simplified diagram shows how an eukaryote could arise from an archaeon (blue), a delta proteobacterium (yellow) and an alpha proteobacterium (red).
