Examples of Vascular Endothelial Heterogeneity at Organ Level
Description
Three organ specific examples visualizing the heterogeneity of endothelial cells: lungs, brain and kidney. Endothelial morphology widely varies to accomodate function in different organs. In the lungs, they are specialized with caveolae to permit gaseous exchange. Brain endothelial cells have tight junctions between them to keep the blood-brain barrier intact. While the kidney endothelial cells have fenestration to allow water and small molecules to pass through them.
