Gut brain axis dysruption in traumatic brain injury

An editable high resolution scientific image depicting Gut brain axis dysruption in traumatic brain injury

Description

Following TBI, autonomic dysregulation leads to intestinal dysmotility and decreased peristalsis, promoting bacterial overgrowth, dysbiosis, and disruption of the intestinal barrier. Bacteria in the intestinal lumen produce metabolites such as butyric acid and short-chain fatty acids, which and send feedback signals to the central nervous system through the vagus nerve and peripheral circulation. HPA activation also increases the production of glucocorticoids generating immune depression.
