Hormetic dose-response curve
Description
Hormesis is induced by acute or moderately stressful–usually positive–stimuli (e.g., temperature changes, and strenuous exercise) (white segment of curve). The induction of this type of stress can yield beneficial systemic effects (e.g., improved immunological and nervous system responses) and enhanced coping mechanisms (cyan segment). These effects are then followed by an inhibitory–usually negative-response (purple segment), and deleterious effects (red segment).
