Mechanism of Resistance in ESBL-Producing Bacteria
Description
Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) is an enzyme produced by gram-negative bacteria, enabling resistance to various beta-lactam antibiotics. These bacteria synthesize beta-lactamase enzymes that bind to and hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring of the antibiotic, preventing it from binding to its target proteins. This reaction allows the bacteria to survive and multiply despite the antibiotic's presence, making infections by these resistant pathogens difficult to treat.
