The intestinal barrier is composed by epithelial cells, mucus, microbiota, IgA, antimicrobial proteins, and intercellular binding proteins such as tight junction proteins. Tight junctions are mainly composed of Claudins, Occludin, Junctional adhesion molecules (JAM), and accessory cytoplasmic proteins such as Zonulas Occludens (ZOs).
