Ketegenesis and ketolysis pathways in hepatic mitochondria.
Description
Ketogenesis primarily takes place in the mitochondria of the liver, using acetyl-CoA. Afterwards, extrahepatic tissues take up these ketone bodies, such as β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and acetoacetate (AcAc), via monocarboxylic acid transporters (MCT). In the mitochondria, a process known as ketolysis takes place in which BHB and AcAc are converted back into acetyl-CoA. During this conversion, ATP is generated via the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) and the electron transport chain (ETC).
