Killing of Stressed Epithelia by Intraepithelial Lymphocytes (IEL)
Description
This template shows in three panels how intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) kill stressed gut epithelial cells, starting with epithelial cells expressing MIC-A and MIC-B in response to a gliadin peptide or other stressor. NKG2D on the IEL binds these stress ligands while CD8 alpha:alpha binds TL, and the activated IEL then kills the stressed cell using the perforin/granzyme pathway.
