Life-cycle of leishmania amazonensis
Description
Leishmaniasis is transmitted by the bite of infected female phlebotomine sandflies. Sandflies inject the infective promastigotes from their proboscis during blood meals. Promastigotes are phagocytised by macrophages, then transform into amastigotes, which multiply by simple division and infect other phagocytic cells. Sandflies become infected by ingesting infected cells during blood meals. In sandflies, amastigotes transform into promastigotes, develop in the gut and migrate to the proboscis.
