An editable high resolution scientific image depicting Life Cycle of Massospora cicadina

Description

This template shows the life cycle of the fungal pathogen Massospora cicadina, tracing how a healthy cicada becomes infected through copulation attempts, develops either a fatal conidial infection or a resting spore infection that progresses over two weeks, and eventually falls apart at the abdomen. It also shows how dormant resting spores in the soil infect new nymphs as they burrow, with the fungus reemerging 13 or 17 years later when infected adults freshly molt.
