Description
A balance between the neuroprotective and neurotoxic branches of the kynurenine pathway is essential, and disruption in this balance leads to abnormalities in depression. Quinolinic acid and 3-hydroxykynurenine are neurotoxic, causing neuronal damage and oxidative stress, while kynurenic acid is neuroprotective. Activation of this pathway reduces serotonin levels and increases neurotoxic compounds, leading to neuron loss, disrupted neurotransmission, and depression symptoms like anhedonia.
