Long-Term Potentiation
Description
This template compares normal synaptic transmission, where Mg2+ blocks the NMDA receptor during low frequency signaling, to the induction of long-term potentiation, where high frequency transmission expels Mg2+ and allows Na+ and Ca2+ influx through the NMDA receptor. The resulting calcium signaling cascade recruits additional AMPA receptors to the postsynaptic membrane, strengthening the synapse.
