Description:

During development, tissues are colonized by yolk sac progenitors that develop into tissue-specific macrophages inhabiting distinct anatomical niches. Bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells contribute to macrophage populations, with some being short-lived macrophages that are replenished constantly by bone marrow monocytes and some becoming long-lived and tissue-resident. The ontogeny and cell cycle of many macrophage subpopulations in fully matured organs and during ageing are unclear.
