Mechanisms of end-organ damage and dysfunction caused by central artery stiffening
Description
In various diseases, central artery stiffening increases pulse wave transmission into the microcirculation, leading to enhanced mechanical activation of the microvascular endothelium. This promotes release of GAS6 (growth arrest–specific 6), activation of Axl on myeloid cells, and infiltration of immune cells into the vasculature and kidney.
This figure is adapted from figure 3 of the article 'Immune Mechanisms in Hypertension'.
