Neutrophil death is intertwined with its immune response
Description
Neutrophils that encounter bacteria can either undergo apoptosis, a non-inflammatory route of pathogen induced cell death or a proinflammatory cell lysis mediated death called necrosis. The balance between these two mechanisms during a bacterial infection plays a pivotal role in the inflammatory response, pathogen clearance, and the progression of disease. Coxiella burnetii is an intracellular pathogen known to subvert mouse neutrophil response.
