Outbreeding Inbred Strains Produces a Mosaic of Alleles Through Meiotic Recombination
Description
Inbred mouse strains are, by definition, homozygous at every locus. When they are outbred to one another, recombination events during meiosis create recombinant chromosomes and fragments that originate in particular parental strains (haplotype blocks). The diagram draws a parallel between meiotic recombination and spinning the wheels of a slot machine. With many generations of outbreeding, the number of haplotype blocks increases and their size decreases. This helps to increase the resolution of genetic association studies.
