Proposed pathophysiological mechanism for post-COVID-19 and post-infection DGBI.
Description
The figure compares the underlying mechanisms of PI DGBI (bacterial, viral, and protozoal) and post-COVID-19 DGBI, showing that they are very similar. In both, there is an alteration in the gut-brain axis, including psychological distress, low-grade inflammation, immune activation, increased intestinal permeability, and dysbiosis. These abnormalities can lead to other mechanisms such as visceral hypersensitivity, bile acid malabsorption, motility abnormalities, and enteroendocrine disturbances.
