Regulation of peripheral clocks by the supraciasmatic nucleus
Description
..This illustration shows how the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) synchronizes peripheral clocks via neuronal and hormonal signals. Light information regulates the activity of the SCN, which in turn influences the pineal gland, the hypothalamic–pituitary axis and the autonomic nervous system. Through hormones such as melatonin, glucocorticoids and gonadal steroids, the SCN ensures that the peripheral tissues maintain the circadian rhythm.
