Schematic diagram of the mechanism of action of Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICI).
Description
Immune checkpoint interaction occurs when PD-L1 (present on the tumour cell) binds to PD-1 (present on the T-cell). This interaction inhibits T-cell activation which prevents the tumour cell death (figure on the left side). Immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as Anti-PD-1 and Anti-PD-L1 antibodies bind to the correspondent immune checkpoint, which prevents PD-L1 binding to PD-1. This process allows T-cell activation and the consequent tumour cell death (figure on the right side).
