Schematic overview of HIV-1 life cycle
Description
The HIV-1 replication cycle begins with viral binding to the host membrane (1), followed by membrane fusion and entry of the viral core (2). Viral RNA is reverse transcribed into DNA during transport to the nucleus (3–5) and then integrated into the host genome (6). The viral DNA is transcribed into mRNA (7), exported (9), translated into viral proteins (8), and assembled into new virions(10). Then budding (11) and maturation (12) produce infectious HIV-1 particles.
