Separation of serum and plasma from blood
Description
A depiction of the difference between serum and plasma after blood collection.
In brief, if the blood is allowed to clot, the liquid after centrifugation is serum. If an anticoagulant is added, the blood will separate into gradients, including plasma, white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells. Addition of a density gradient solution to blood exposed to an anticoagulant results in further separation of blood components.
