Structure and Function of Mucins
Description
This illustration presents the structure of mucins MUC1 and MUC4. On the left, mucins are depicted with glycosylated regions that form a protective layer. On the right, membrane-bound and secreted mucins are shown. Membrane-bound mucins anchor to the epithelial cell membrane and interact with signaling pathways, aiding in immune response regulation and repair. Secreted mucins form a gel-like matrix in the mucus layer, trapping pathogens and preventing them from reaching epithelial cells.
