De novo synthesis of ceramide in the ER, ceramide gets transported to Golgi appartus. In Golgi, ceramide gets modified to further complex sphingolipids like glycosphingolipids or sphingomyelin, or phosporylated to bioactive ceramide-1-phosphate or sphingosine-1-phosphate. Salvage pathway, where complex sphingolipids get recycled to ceramide again takes places at plasma membrane and in lysosomes. Organelles in light shades behind molecules. In italics are the envolved enzymes.
