Description:
Synaptosomes are pinched off nerve terminals which are created during homogenization of brain tissue. They contain synaptic mitochondria as well as vesicles filled with neurotransmitters and have proven useful models for investigating processes such as neurotransmission as well as cellular energetics at the nerve terminal. They can be purified from the crude mitochondrial sample through gradient based centrifugation such as Ficoll or Percoll.
