Description: To generate an MRI signal, the system must be perturbed from its equilibrium state. Applying radiofrequency (RF) pulses at the Larmor frequency achieves this as it excites the protons causing them to change from the parallel, low-energy state to the antiparallel, high-energy state. The net magnetisation vector is tipped into the transverse plane (X-Y plane) and away from its alignment with B0 because of the RF pulse.
