The Diversity Outbred (DO) Mice
Description
Eight mouse strains that capture much of the genetic diversity of all inbred mouse strains were chosen to develop an outbred population suitable for genetic association studies, the Diversity Outbred (DO) mice. Five of the strains are widely used and known to have specific phenotypes; NOD mice develop autoimmune diabetes, NZO mice develop obesity and type 2 diabetes, C57BL/6J mice are susceptible to diet-induced obesity and metabolic syndrome. A/J mice are relatively resistant to diet-induced metabolic disease. Three wild-derived strains, CAST, PWK, and WSB, contribute much of the genetic diversity of this population and often have alleles with phenotype values quite distinct from those of the other strains.
