This figure illustrates the three main branches of the unfolded protein response (UPR) that are activated upon endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress: PERK, IRE1α and ATF6. Each of these pathways contributes to the restoration of ER homeostasis by regulating protein synthesis, increasing the ability to fold proteins and promoting the degradation of misfolded proteins.
