BioRender Template
The ubiquitin-proteasome system
Description
Ubiquitin (Ub) is first activated by the ubiquitin-activating enzyme (E1) in the presence of ATP, then by the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (E2). Lastly, the ubiquitin ligase (E3) recruits the ubiquitin-bound E2 enzyme and a substrate to transfer the ubiquitin from E2 to the substrate. Proteasome targeting can be formed by mono- or a polyubiquitin chain. When targeted by the proteasome, substrates are degraded into short peptides, and the free ubiquitin is released and recycled
